How to Install a Pantograph Hinge With Gas Struts
How many Google searches does an engineer need to do before finding instructions on assembling and fitting a Pantograph Hinge?
None!
We've put this video together so that when the time comes for you to install a pantograph hinge, you won't need to work from only difficult two dimensional drawings.
Instructions:
1. Begin by creating sturdy support mounts for your struts. These will be taking a lot of pressure so have them fixed securely. Repeat for both sides.
2. Fabricate brackets to hold the hinge assembly and ensure they're in tightly.
3. Next you'll need to assemble the hinge (shown in video) and measure it to fit into your door. Ensure that both arms are the same length
4. Now you can install the pantograph hinge, it should be a snug fit. Just tap it into place.
5. Now loosely bolt the arms of the hinge to the bar and raise them to eye level so that you can make sure that they're level to each other. Secure the arms in place and make sure that they're nice and tight so that the door remains flush with the frame.
6. Install closing brackets on the door and on the frame. Now you're ready to fit the door. It should now operate smoothly with just the big arms in place.
7. Adjust the rod ends to match the height of the door mounts.
8. Lift the door into its highest position so that you can loosly fit the gas struts. Make sure that the big end is above centre so that the oil in the strut sits at the bottom and always lubricates the strut.
9. Figure out what the weight of your finished door is going to be and add that weight to the door frame (if applicable).
10. Release some pressure (with an allen key) until the door is firm but easy enough to close.
DONE! You now have yourself a working Pantograph Hinge
